Coping with Moving Houses

Moving houses is a prospect that causes one of these two feelings: excitement, and sadness. Often, it causes both.

The reason is simple enough. When you move from one house to the next, you’re not just shifting your belongings from one building to another. The house that you now move in to will be an entirely new territory, a nearly alien location whose walls and windows you’re not acquainted with. The house you lived in has become a part of your life, almost like a living and breathing member.

Naturally, there’s a significant amount of grief and nostalgia attached with the experience of moving. But while coping with houses is definitely a difficult phenomenon to cope with, it isn’t quite impossible. We’ll explain how.

Get Involved in the New House

Often it’s the children who experience the most grief upon leaving an old house and moving to a new one. The major reason behind their morose spell is that they’re leaving their childhood friends behind, and it’s understandable.

One way of getting them to snap out of this depressive episode is to get them involved in the new house. Talk to them about it; discuss it with them, run ideas off them. Ask them for their advice, take them to see the house and make them involved in the process.

The more excited you can get them for the move, the less sad they’re going to be. Enthusiasm for the move is the only way to make them forget their leaving a loved abode.

Talk About It

Think of it as therapy. Gather your family together and talk about the process, make plans about the new house, turn the excitement up a few notches.

A great way of doing this is to plan and organize a housewarming party and delegating certain responsibilities to each family member. This will keep them involved and engaged. Often when a person is occupied with something they’re less likely to think about things like missing an older house.

Integrate in the Neighborhood

When you’re moving to a new house, remember that you’re not just moving houses but also moving neighborhoods. A great way in which you can integrate yourself into your new neighborhood is to meet up with the neighbors and talking to them.

Invite them over for a dinner or something to present a more relaxed environment for the shier members of the household to get involved in.

Teenage Blues

If you have teenage children, be prepared for a great showcasing of resentment and other similar sentiment. Rest assured that it’s all natural for teenagers to act like chimpanzees on steroids, and know that their emo phase too shall pass.

They might stop talking, staying in their rooms, and going out at odd hours—but it’s part of their coping mechanism. Just as long as you’re keeping track of where they’re going and who they’re meeting with, you’re okay and have nothing to worry about.

Join a Local Club

To better incorporate yourself into your new locality, find out if there are any local clubs or societies that you can join. It could be a football club or a reading society—as long as you’re finding as avenue to meet up with the new people around you, you should be good.
